What are the different types of defense mechanisms and how do they work?

Answer 1

Andrew Miller

Defense mechanisms are psychological strategies used to cope with reality and maintain self-image. Common types include repression (blocking distressing memories), denial (refusing to accept reality), projection (attributing one’s own feelings to others), displacement (shifting emotions to a safer target), and rationalization (justifying behaviors). They protect the ego from anxiety and conflict.
